Four cities are competing to host the 2010 Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF), a five-day conference which aims to bring European science to the attention of all citizens.

Representatives from Copenhagen, Paris, Turin and Wroclaw made presentations on the behalf of their cities to the Euroscience selection committee on 26 and 27 January at the International Council of Science in Paris.

'The four bids were exceedingly professional and thorough, and the selection process will be challenging. All four cities presented us with ideas relevant not just to their local venues but to Europe as a whole,' said Chair of the selection committee, Dr Peter Tindemans.

Held every two years, ESOF visits a different major European city, showcasing Europe's achievements right across the scientific and technological spectrum. The forum comprises a large number of events and happenings throughout the ESOF host city, which are targeted to the public at large, of all ages.

At ESOF2004 in Stockholm, the programme 'Science in the City' attracted 11,000 visitors, while at ESOF2006, some 60,000 turned up for the event's summer of science or 'Wissenschaftssommer' programme. ESOF 2008 travels southwards to Barcelona, Spain, where an exciting line-up of events is expected.

The Euroscience Selection Committee will now analyse the proposals and report its recommendations to the Euroscience Board. The final decision will be made by the Euroscience Board and made public in early March 2007.
